Make Your Own Birthday/Party Cake

A store bought cake can cost a lot of money, especially when you have three kids like me. Not to mention including buying cakes for friends and family, we would have to buy at least three cakes a year; that's a cost of at least $100 every year. $2,000 will be spent on birthday cakes by the time they turn 18! Luckily for me my wife is pretty talented in making her own cakes. This is not something easy like most of my recipes I post on here but with practice I think it's do-able. Also, my wife does 99% of the work so I am only describing the process of making the cake, can't really add any tips. If you have any trouble, ask Angel for some tips like how to make flowers or writing on the cake. (https://www.facebook.com/angel.hook.3)

Ingredients:

Butter cream (A lot, left overs can be frozen) 6-10 cups. Recipe
     - powered sugar
     - butter
     - vanilla extract
     - milk
Box cake mix (2)
Food coloring
Cake decorating supplies

Savings: $10-$40

It's easy to use the box cake mix and it doesn't have much of an effect on how your cake turns out. Use two cake pans to stack each cake to get a nice tall cake.

It would be even cheaper and taste better to make your own cake batter but it's so much easier to buy the box cake mix and it can almost always be found buy one get one free.  The frosting on the other hand is very important to be home made. The biggest reason is the store bought frosting is not efficient to decorate a cake. The second issue is the cost, even if you buy the frosting from a bakery it will still be very expensive.
After you have made your own butter cream, spread the frosting on top of the first cake. You can also add in extra goodness like strawberries or nuts. Then add the second cake on top of it. Just add food coloring to get the frosting the color that is needed. Finish frosting the rest of the cake.

Smooth all the wrinkles and folds out of the frosting. This part takes practice and is a lot easier with the right utensils. This is the one part Angel say's is a lot harder to do at home because it can get expensive to buy all the proper tools.
Use the remaining frosting to pipe decorations onto the cake. The bags are cheap if bought in bulk and there are many different tips to use at the end of the bags. The tips can be expensive but you only have to buy them once.

The best part is watching your kids or family enjoy a home made cake specially designed for their enjoyment!
